Air Integrity HVAC BBB Business Review

Cleaning Your Condenser is Non-negotiable

Your condenser is the outside component of your AC system; it removes the heat from your indoor air and moves it outside with the outdoor air. And as mentioned in the title, it is not optional to clean it – this ensures that it properly completes the heat transfer process, which is vital in maintaining your home’s comfort.

Why is a clean condenser so important?

Inside or attached to your condenser are parts like the compressor, copper or aluminum coils/fins, the fan motor, and the fan. Having an unclean AC condenser can hinder your unit from providing the indoor temperatures you desire. For example, build-up or blockages on the coils can restrict airflow, while also straining expensive components like the compressor, causing it to work harder than it would have if it were clean. Since the condenser is such an imperative piece of your system, its lack of care could decrease its lifespan.

How to know if it is time to clean it:

Furthermore, consumers must know when it is time to clean their condensers. Some common signs are visible dirt, buildup, or debris on the fins of the condenser. For a more thorough check, grab a flashlight and shine it on one side of the condenser. If light is barely breaking through the rings, it is a sign that there is too much dirt on them. Additionally, if your home is receiving poor airflow, this acts as a reminder to check your outside condenser and perform this light check.

Steps for cleaning the condenser yourself

If the condenser is not clean, it is easy to clean it yourself. All you need is a water hose and coil cleaner (optional). Before getting access to the interior of the condenser, make sure to turn off the power by accessing the breaker for safety. After the power is off, remove the top of the condenser and set it aside. If there’s bigger debris, such as leaves surrounding the bottom of the condenser, remove those first for an easier process. Coil cleaner is optional, but if used, spray it amongst the coils or fins on the inside, letting it sit for a few minutes to break down the dirt and build up. Then, with your hose on gentle pressure (high pressure can bend the coils), spray through the coils. If you choose not to buy the coil cleaner, you can skip the waiting and spray water directly through your coils to clean your condenser.
