One reason a customer may schedule a service call is that there is water leaking from their system. There are some common indicators that explain why this could be happening. For example, after a technician examines your air conditioning unit, they may detect a clogged drain line. A drain line’s purpose is in its name: it drains the moisture created while the unit functions. Drain lines that are clogged with dirt, dust, or some form of debris will lead to a delay in condensation transfer and cause the drain pan to overflow. When the drain pan surpasses its maximum capacity, it will result in water leaking from an AC system.
Furthermore, for a unit that has a frozen evaporator coil, you will experience the system leaking water. An AC unit’s evaporator coil is vital in keeping it running with longevity. This coil cools down the heat that accumulates within the unit, preventing overheating. Factors such as poor airflow, inadequate refrigerant levels, and even faulty installation can lead to frozen coils; if the coil experiences excessive cooling, it will result in a freeze around the exterior. The created ice will eventually melt and fill the drain pan above the maximum level it is supposed to hold, making the system leak due to the overflow.
Lastly, one of the simplest reasons your unit may leak water is from an air filter that is too dirty. A dirty filter correlates to having frozen evaporator coils. Air filters help protect the AC unit from airborne particles or debris, ensuring that the air quality remains clean. However, if the filter is too dirty it will fail to create a consistent airflow. As previously discussed, the lack of sufficient circulation can lead to the freezing of a unit’s evaporator coils.
If you find yourself with an AC unit which is leaking water, check the air filter first. Replacing the air filter is an easy job that you can do personally to save yourself time and money. But if you find that is not the cause of your problem, give Air Integrity HVAC a call. We strive to efficiently service our customers. We are dedicated to repairing drain lines, evaporator coils, or any other component necessary, at a cost that leaves our clients satisfied!
